While most cleaners do have to clean toilets at some point during a shift, there is a lot more that goes into a cleaning job than meets the eye. At Summit Building Services, we believe that taking pride and finding value in your work allows you to accomplish feats that others wouldn't think possible. While cleaning may seem like a mundane job for many, there are many aspects that people could find appealing, even if they're not interested in cleaning toilets.

Pros and Cons Janitorial Jobs

Pros of Janitor Jobs

  • Great Part-time work: The hours are often in the early evening after businesses close around 5. Buildings vary, but most cleaners are given flexibility on what time they arrive at the building. This allows cleaners to set their own schedule inside the parameters of their building's hours.
  • Independence: This may not be the best situation for everyone, but there are many people who would prefer working alone over working customer service-type jobs. These jobs have a significant degree of independence and aren’t constantly being supervised.
  • Flexibility: Many buildings have flexible cleaning hours from the time their building closes until it opens the next day. This gives cleaners a wide window in which they can fit their scheduled cleaning.
  • Good Pay: Cleaning jobs can pay better than other part-time work. While many employers are pushing wages higher among recent labor shortages, pay for cleaning positions ranges from $10-18 throughout the cleaning industry.

Cons of Janitor Jobs

  1. Occasionally Dirty: It shouldn't be surprising that cleaning can be dirty from time to time. Often the worst of it comes during restroom cleaning, but large amounts of trash, dirty floors (especially during winter), and other unexpected messes can make janitorial jobs less appealing.
  2. Late Night Hours: Some buildings aren’t able to be cleaned until later hours of the night which won’t necessarily work for everyone’s schedule.
  3. Working Alone: While there are certainly quite a lot of buildings that do have crews of cleaners that all clean at the same time, it’s definitely the norm. People who like working in teams, or aren’t motivated to work alone may not be well suited for janitorial work.
  4. Physical Demands: Cleaning requires workers to stay on their feet for several hours at a time, while also bending, lifting, and wiping. While the job's physical demands vary by building, cleaners can walk up to 3 miles in a three to four-hour shift.
